How to use scented candles safely

Candles are open flames. Fragrance performance only matters when placement, distance and supervision are right.

Use a stable, clear location

Use a level, heat-resistant surface and keep clear of curtains, paper, shelves and other combustible items. Consider children and pets, and keep the candle out of walkways.

Always supervise

Never leave the room while a candle is burning and never fall asleep with it lit. Extinguish it in draughts, if behaviour is unusual, if the vessel cracks or if it produces heavy soot.

Follow the maker's instructions

Warnings, minimum distances, maximum burn time and residual-wax limits are product specific. The label and packaging always take priority over general rules of thumb.
