How to burn scented candles correctly
The first burn shapes the candle's future performance. A few simple habits help prevent tunnelling, soot and an overheated vessel.
Let the first melt pool reach the edge
Allow the surface to melt evenly towards the edge. Depending on the diameter, this often takes two to four hours. Always stop earlier if the maker specifies a shorter maximum burn time.
Keep the wick short and clean
Trim a cotton wick to roughly five millimetres before lighting. Remove carbon deposits and debris from the wax. An overlong wick produces a large, unstable flame.
Know when to stop
Never leave the candle unattended and place it on a heat-resistant surface away from draughts. Extinguish it if it soots heavily or the flame grows unusually high. Stop using it when about one centimetre of wax remains.
