Why do scented candles produce soot?
A brief dark trail while extinguishing is normal. Visible soot during the burn usually points to wick length, draughts or an overly long burn.
An overlong wick
A large flame consumes more wax than can burn cleanly. Extinguish the candle, let it cool and trim the wick to the maker's recommendation, often around five millimetres.
Draughts and uneven placement
A constantly moving flame burns unevenly. Place the candle level and away from windows, fans and busy walkways.
Clean the vessel correctly
Let the vessel cool completely, then wipe exterior soot with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid thermal shock and never add water to liquid wax.

Is candle soot harmful?
Avoid heavy or persistent soot, ventilate and correct the cause. A properly used candle should not visibly smoke.
